Abstract

The recent emergence of new families of non-oxide glasses has expanded the realm of materials available to the optical designer. This tutorial review endeavors to survey the fundamental optical properties of one such group, which can be readily prepared in bulk and fiber form, namely multicomponent glasses derived from the fluorides of heavy metals. Since much of the applications interest in fluoride glasses stems from their ability to transmit light in the 1–5 micron wavelength region, emphasis is given to mid-infrared optical phenomena.
