Abstract

In transposition of the great arteries the aorta originates from the anatomical right ventricle and the main pulmonary artery from the anatomical left ventricle. The condition is also referred to as d-transposition of the great arteries, or can be described as atrioventricular concordance with ventriculo-arterial discordance. The aorta is usually situated to the right and anterior, or to the right and lateral of the main pulmonary artery. The aorta may also be positioned directly anterior to the main pulmonary artery. Rarely the position of the aorta may be posterior and to the right, or anterior and to the left of the main pulmonary artery (1, 2). The right branch of the pulmonary artery always passes beneath the aortic arch.
