Abstract
The unique ability of the gastroduodenal mucosa to resist the corrosive effects of gastric acid and pepsin has been the subject of considerable interest and speculation over the last century. Hypotheses have emerged and floundered with regular monotony and the precise mechanisms responsible for preserving epithelial integrity still remain a mystery.
