Abstract
Highly selective vagotomy (HSV) is still regarded as ‘experimental’ in most centres in the United States, on the ground that follow-up is too short and incidences of recurrent ulceration too high. In fact, HSV has been used extensively in Europe for 15 years, long-term results are available, and, as I will show, incidences of recurrence of 1–5% at 5 years’ follow-up are quite common, when appropriate surgical expertise is available and some form of quality control is employed.
