Abstract
Several prostaglandins have been shown to inhibit the secretion of acid and pepsin by the stomach of various species. They possess anti-ulcer acitivity in the upper gastrointestinal tract in animal models and have beneficial ‘cytoprotective’ effects on the intergrity of the gastric mucosa when it is exposed to noxious stimuli in animals and man. The ‘cytoprotective’ effect of prostaglandins is independent of the anti-secretory action.1
