Interaction of schistosomes and macrophages

  • Chapter
Mononuclear Phagocytes

Abstract

The cytostatic or cytotoxic activity of mononuclear phagocytes against tumor cells has long been known, but only recently has the possibility of an effector function of macrophages in immunity to helminth parasites been considered. In vitro studies showed that cytotoxic T cells play a negligable role, if any, in schistosome killing (1) while that of the phagocytic cell populations, including macrophages, eosinophils and neutrophils (2) is predominant. One of the major results of these studies is the demonstration of precise interactions between a particular antibody isotype and the effector cell concerned. It should however be stressed that at present our knowledge is based on in vitro studies and the in vivo effector function of macrophages, as well as other phagocytic cells, is not yet clear.
