Abstract

Since the advent of modern medicine towards the end of the 19th century, it has been observed that non-tuberculous pelvic infections in the female are rarely seen in women who are not sexually active [1]. For decades, the correlations between promiscuity, gonorrhoea, and acute salpingitis were regarded as so significant that little effort was made to study the problem further. Only lately have we learned that the gonococcus is but one of many sexually transmissible agents capable of causing salpingitis [2], and also that the disease is distributed through all socio-economic and educational strata of society [3].
