Abstract
Many studies of the mechanical, geometric and filtration behaviour of human red blood cells (RBC) involve suspending RBC in media other than autologous plasma. There thus arises the question of which buffer system to use. In an attempt to answer this question, three iso-osmotic buffer systems were investigated in order to evaluate RBC volume stability in these media; filtration measurements were not made but the results can be related to presently existing literature reports of cell volume versus filtration behaviour.
