Abstract

Campylobacter enteritis is now recognized as a common disease of worldwide distribution. Wherever it has been sought it has been found and in several countries it has emerged as the commonest form of acute bacterial diarrhoea. Since the regular reporting of Campylobacter isolations to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre* (CDSC) began in 1977, the annual totals (England and Wales) have steadily increased to culminate in a 1981 total of 12,496, which is substantially more than the salmonella total of 10,745 (Fig. 1).
