Abstract

The acute diarrheal diseases have long been recognized as a major cause of mortality and morbidity in infants and young children in the developing world. This paper will summarize (a) the magnitude of the problem; (b) the major bacterial agents of acute diarrhea; and (c) the global WHO programme for control of all acute diarrheal diseases.
