Gossypol—the male fertility-regulating agent

Abstract

The discovery of the activity of gossypol as a male antifertility agent has aroused considerable interest among students of reproductive biology1, and constitutes a major lead in the search for methods of regulation of fertility in males. In 1957 the Chinese scientist Liu-Bao-Shu reported in a local medical journal of Shanghai that in places where crude cottonseed oil was consumed in cooking there were usually more cases of infertility2. It was only in early 1970 that a systematic study established that the active ingredient in cottonseed oil responsible for the induction of infertility is gossypol (C3OH30O8), a polyphenol.
