Abstract

The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is increasing among children and assuming greater importance to physicians who treat children (Felman et al., 1978). In some ways these diseases are similar in age groups, i.e. the simultaneous occurrence of gonococcal and chlamydial infections is common in both children (Rettig and Nelson, 1981; Fraser et al., 1983) and adults (Karney et al., 1977). There are, however, major differences in epidemiology, clinical manifestations, evaluation, and treatment. A pathophysiologic basis underlies many of these differences, an understanding of which is essential for rational management.
