Abstract

Since the early description of auricular reconstruction by Tagliacozi (1957), Dieffenbach (1845), Szymanovski (1870) and others, Gillies (1920) introduced a technique of embedding a framework of autogenous cartilage under the mastoid skin followed by raising it up to the lateral side of the head, the secondary skin defect being covered by a cervical pedicle flap. A split thickness skin flap was used for this purpose by Pierce (1930). The procedure is reserved for congenital microtia.
