Abstract
Reports of inflammatory reaction in uterine endometrium in the presence of an IUD have been unequivocal (Greenwald, 1965; Parr, 1969; Parr and Segal, 1966; Williams and Peck, 1977). An inflammatory reaction appears to be a common denominator in almost every animal: mouse (Doyle and Margolis, 1965; Parr and Segal, 1966); hamster (Saksena et al., 1974); goat (Janakiraman et al., 1970); cow (Hawk et al., 1968); pig (Gerrits et al, 1968); rabbit (Ledger and Bickley, 1966); and sheep (Hawk, 1967), and leads to infiltration of numerous polymorphonuclear leukocytes, mononuclear cells and macrophages in the endometrium and uterine lumen (El Sahwi and Moyer, 1971; Parr and Segal, 1966). These cells possibly release some embryotoxic material in the uterine lumen (El Sahwi and Moyer, 1971; Parr, 1969, 1970).
