Abstract

Most family planning programs offer IUDs for fertility regulation; the protection against unwanted pregnancies afforded by the IUD is well documented. The most common causes for abandoning the method are bleeding and pain (Population Report Series, 1979, 1982). While the chemical constituents, and physical properties such as size, shape and elastic memory have been extensively studied, little attention has been paid to the size of the uterine cavity of IUD users. There are a few studies looking at uterine measurements of different ethnic groups and, as a rule, one IUD size is considered suitable for all women.
