Abstract

Although allusions to urethritis may be found as far back as the Old Testament — Galen used the term ‘gonorrhoea’, meaning ‘a flow of semen’, to describe this disease entity — the confusion between syphilis, gonorrhea, and chancroid persisted until 1793 when Benjamin Bell established the distinctions between gonorrhea amd syphilis. By 1879, Albert Neisser had described Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Leistokow reported the cultivation of the gonococcus in 1882. In 1885 Hans Gram described his method of staining bacteria and it became possible to find cases of urethritis that apparently were not due to the gonococcus (Morton, 1977). A clinical picture of nongonococcal urethritis gradually appeared, but the predominant disease was always gonorrhea.
