Restrictive cardiomyopathy

Heart Muscle Disease

Part of the book series: Current Status of Clinical Cardiology ((CSOCC,volume 3))

Abstract

Restrictive cardiomyopathy is characterized by a restriction to diastolic filling and ventricular distensibility that can be produced by endocardial and/or myocardial lesions. The signs of ‘heart failure’ which result are not related to abnormal myocardial function, but are the result of back pressure due to impaired diastolic filling. Systolic function is usually well preserved. When this process becomes extensive, often as a result of superadded thrombus on top of endocardial scarring, the already small ventricular cavity may become ‘obliterated’.
