Abstract
The occurrence of the occasional positive pregnancy test in males with testicular tumours has been known for many years and is, of course, due to the occurrence of choriocarcinomatous tissue in some of these tumours. This is one of the areas where direct comparison between American and British classification is not possible. Tumours composed entirely of choriocarcinoma alone are rare and are the only ones so called in the WHO and Mostofi classifications, in which composite tumours possessing areas of choriocarcinoma are called say, embryonal carcinoma plus choriocarcinoma, depending upon the nature of the other element present. The B.T.T.P. on the other hand uses the term ‘malignant teratorna trophoblastic’ for any tumour in which elements of choriocarcinoma are found. There are also differences in the histological criteria employed, the B.T.T.P. insisting on the presence of syncytiotrophoblast and cytotrophoblast in a definite papillary pattern, whilst the presence of the two cellular components with no definite pattern is all that is required by the Americans.
