Abstract

How valuable is a particular wood for nature conservation? Which site best represents a certain type of woodland? Are some parts of a wood more valuable than others? These and similar questions are repeatedly faced by those concerned with nature conservation, and the answers form the basis of practical policies and decisions on the future of individual woods. Good answers, however, are difficult to find.
