Modification of Heavy Metals Solubility in Soil Treated with Sewage Sludge

Processing and Use of Organic Sludge and Liquid Agricultural Wastes

Summary

Aerobic and anaerobic sewage sludges were applied to a sandy loam soil. Sludges were apllied at a rate corresponding to 30 t/ha/yr of organic matter and planted with corn. Soil samples were collected at the beginning of the experiment, every year, one month after sludge application and at harvest time. A sequential fractionation (H2O, KNO3, DTPA) was used to study the solubility of heavy metals in the soil. The exchangeable form of metals but Pb showed an increase after each addition of sludge and a decrease at harvest time. A similar trend was found for metals in complexed or adsorbed forms. Interactions among heavy metals and organic matter were also studied. In untreated soil metals were linked only by organic matter of a low molecular weight; in the sludge-treated soils metals distributed between fractions of humic materials of both high and low molecular weight.
