Deposition/Canopy-Interactions in Two Forest Ecosystems of Northwest Germany

  • Chapter
Book cover Atmospheric Pollutants in Forest Areas

Abstract

From the flux balance of the forest canopy the rates of total deposition (precipitation- + interception-deposition) in two forest stands are calculated for the elements H+, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Al, Fe, S, Cl and N. Special emphasis is given to the seasonal patterns of deposition.

The deposition of protons results in a stress to the buffer systems of the leaves. The buffering of protons on the surfaces of leaves and bark is connected with the leaching of cations, mainly Ca. The rates of proton buffering and the consequences are discussed as well as the seasonal patterns and rates of cation leaching.

Determination of the rates of total deposition of N from the flux balance of the canopy proved to be difficult because significant amounts of N may be assimilated within the canopy.
