Abstract

Evolutionary guidance is discussed as a strategy for simplifying the problems associated with the use of recombinant DNA techniques to study structure-function relationships in proteins. Evidence is given that suggests that natural selection “fine tunes” the behavior of proteins. Also progress on the synthesis, cloning, and expression of a gene for pancreatic ribonuclease, designed to permit rapid modification, is reported.
