Abstract

The use of redox enzymes as catalysts in bioelectrochetnical reactors is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on cofactor recycling, especially in terms of electrochemical regeneration of NAD(P)+ and NAD(P)H and on the choice of, and immobilisation of, redox enzymes. Model reactors constructed for the production of 6-phosphogluccnate and cinnamyl alcohol are discussed in detail. The future of enzymes in catalysing hydroxylation reactions in terms of functionalising carbon skeletons is explored.
