Abstract
This paper is a review of some of the properties of marine aerosols and the relation of these properties to sources, sinks and turbulent transport characteristics. The ocean is a source of sea salt solution particles produced as sea water droplets by bursting air bubbles. Whitecaps are the primary mechanism for the creation of these air bubbles near the ocean surface. The ocean is a sink for aerosol particles brought into the marine boundary layer by a combination of advection and entrainment. All types of aerosol particles are removed from the atmosphere and dumped into the ocean by dry and wet deposition. Dry deposition can be estimated from simple (but essentially unverified) models based on diffusion sublayer and surface layer turbulence scaling theory (e.g. Slinn and Slinn, 1980). Wet deposition rates as a function of particle size and chemistry can only be crudely estimated atpresent. The dynamics of the marine aerosol size spectrum can be modeled by a conventional mixed-layer formalism where the boundary layer aerosol is considered to be a mixture of whitecap produced sea-salt particles and entrained continental background partie les. Such a model requires specification of the ocean surface droplet source strength, Si, as a function of wind speed. The height dependence of aerosol concentration in the surface layer and the mixed lay er is discussed.
