Abstract
Organo-chlorine compounds tend to be viewed as equally harmful substances. However, individually they have a wide range of properties and uses and certainly do not present the same degree of hazard to the environment. The background to the common fear which organo-chlorines engender and the main control options are briefly examined. A number of individual compounds are then reviewed in terms of the benefits they offer to man and the attendant side effects they may have on the environment. The relative impacts of alternative control options are discussed in terms of the examples given and some comments are offered on the need for, and relative merits of, alternative disposal options.
