Abstract

Planning started in India just after Independence but the commitment to planned development had been made by the Congress Party much earlier. The need for raising the standard of living of the people by achieving faster rate of growth, equitable distribution, and complete political and economic independence was felt from the very inception of Indian Planning.

This paper is an abridged version of two other earlier papers contributed by the author. These are: Growth, Equity and Self reliance published in Main-stream dated 19th June, 1984 (Vol. XXII No. 41) with necessary updatings and another paper contributed in the book Seventh Plan Perspective edited by Dr. M. Adiseshiah (1985). However, the views are of the author and not of the institution he belongs to.
