Internal Rotation of the Sun as a Consequence of Instabilities in the Radiative Interior

Abstract

We consider the effect of the molecular weight gradient in the Sun’s radiative interior on the GSF instability, and deduce the marginal gradient of angular velocity which can be tolerated. The same gradient is also calculated for the ABCD instability which has the lowest threshold of the hydrodynamical instabilities. The curves we obtain for the angular velocity contradict those inferred from the observed splittings of p-mode oscillations. We suggest that angular momentum can be transferred from interior owing to some instability caused by the presence of a global magnetic field in the Sun’s core.
