Abstract
This study treats tonal phenomena within the framework of lexical phonology. A basic claim is that tonal representations are derived by applying autosegmental conventions in a manner governed by morphological constituency. Rules that apply to such representations may be assigned to various domains — lexical, post-lexical and/or phonetic. I have also argued that underlying tonal representations are constrained to include only non-redundant information, that is, non-redundant feature values and unpredictable association lines.
