Part of the book series: Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Low-Dimensional Structures ((PCMA,volume 7))

Abstract

In the late Seventies photoemission spectroscopy became the leading experimental technique in the investigation of the electronic structure of solids [1]. This was the result of an accelerated evolution which started in the early Seventies with fundamental improvements in the instrumentation and in the theoretical background. Layered compounds have been among the systems most extensively studied by photoemission throughout its evolutionary period. This is due to the strong fundamental interest in the electronic properties of two-dimensional systems. Furthermore, the nearly-two-dimensional character of layered compounds and their extremely low chemical reactivity makes them almost ideal test systems for new photoemission techniques. On the one hand, therefore, the study of layered compounds has been crucial to the development of modern photoemission. On the other hand, the large number of photoemission experiments performed in recent years have improved our understanding of the electronic properties of virtually every family of layered compounds.
