Abstract

In November 1984 surgeon William DeVries performed what is now referred to as the latest in medical miracles; he kept his patient, William Schroeder, alive with an artificial heart. DeVries’ first attempt with artificial heart extended another patient’s life by 112 days. These feats in medical technology are regarded as a step forward over the transplant of human organs — heart, pancreas, liver, and kidney — for which physicians in the West have now attained a high degree of expertise.
