Abstract

Bioengineering research for all types of biomédical applications has expanded tremendously during the past decade. One driving force in the biomaterials area has been the increasing demand for prosthetic implants to replace diseased of malfunctioning organs. Several exciting and innovative applications of materials science and technology are presently being developed for implant use with bone and teeth. These include : composites, especially those where the components are biodegradable and/or bioresorbably; a special class of so-called osteophilic (bone bonding) ceramics: and porous metal or polymer or ceramic-clad metallic systems. These materials and systems are being used to cover a wide range of needs such as : boneplates for fracture healing artificial tendons and ligaments: joint (e.g. hip and knee) prosthesis, dental implants; alveolar ridge augmentation, etc.
