Abstract

Design of a laboratory is a function of current and projected production. Factors to be considered in designing a laboratory include methods (a) to improve materials flow through the laboratory, (b) to strictly isolate clean areas from other areas of the facility, (c) to improve movement of personnel in and out of clean areas, and (d) to plan so that future expansion can be accomodated readily. Reasons for building a new laboratory include the need to increase production capacity, desire to improved air quality within the laboratory, and the desire to scale up production without increasing supervision. Constraints on laboratory design are cost and preexisting facilities with which one must work, e.g. an existing building.
