Possibilities of Control of the Stem Dieback (Stiellaehme) of Grape by Foliar Applications

Abstract

The efficacy of new chemical formulations based on Ca and Mg has been tested in vine by foliar applications, as a treatment alternative to Mg sulphate. Trials were conducted on the variety “Croatina” over two years, distributing the products in aqueous vehicle onto the epigaeal portion of plants next to changing colour stage.

Treatments influenced both yield and sugar content values, as well as the parameters for evaluation of stem dieback, namely the number of bunches per vine-stock affected by stem dieback and damage percentage per vine stock.

The Mg-based formulations seem to be more effective than the Ca-based ones.

The Mg sulphate, a product tested for long time, has confirmed its excellent efficacy against this physiopathy.

Moreover, the products containing Ca and Mg as “protalosate” chelates, as well as a suspension (SD 787 A) based on Mg (NO3)2 + Ca (NO3)2 appeared of promise.
