Abstract
Applications of body surface potential mapping to clinical electrocardiography have increased, but only slowly in comparison to other, contemporary, non-invasive tests for heart disease. Some of the reasons for this are technical in nature, such as the number and placement of leads, sampling rates and methods of display. Other reasons are concerned with the expense and time of setting up a map acquisition and procesing facility. These technical considerations are not insurmountable and practical solutions exist to all of them. However, there are scientific reasons, more responsible for the slow progress of clinical mapping, which deal with the very nature of the electrocardiographic problem.
