Abstract

Diabetes meliitus is defined by the WHO (1) as a state of chronic hyperglycaemia. The main hypoglycaemic factor, insulin, is a hormone produced by the B-cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. An increase in the blood glucose level leads to insulin secretion. Insulin exerts its hypoglycaemic effect by suppressing glucose production in the liver and by stimulating glucose uptake in fat and muscle after binding to a specific receptor in the cell membrane. By means of this feedback loop glucose homeostasis is ensured. Hyperglycaemia can thus be caused by a decreased insulin production or a diminished insulin action or both. Other hormonal and neural influences can modulate this system.
