Abstract

Idiotypes are phenotypic markers of V region genes encoding the specificity of two polypeptide chains which constitute the antigen receptor of T or B lymphocytes. Two categories of idiotopes are expressed on the immune receptor of lymphocytes. Individual idiotypes are clonotypic antigenic determinants expressed only by a single clone. These idiotypes results from somatic recombination or somatic mutational events. Generally, they are not inherited. A second category is represented by cross-reactive idiotypes, shared by clones exhibiting the same antigen specificity as well as by some with different antigen specificities. These idiotypes are antigenic markers of V germline genes since they are expressed by the majority or all individuals of an inbred strain or of a species. The idiotypes, as antigenic markers, can elicit a humoral or cellular immune response not only in xenogeneic or allogeneic animals, but also in syngeneic or even autologous systems.
