Thyroid Tomography Using a Seven Pinhole Collimator

Abstract

In this paper we discuss a new application of the seven pinhole (7-P) collimator: tomographic imaging of the thyroid. The collimator has been re-optimized for this purpose by diminishing the distance from the aperture plate to the crystal and by choosing a smaller diameter for the pinholes. The reconstruction technique employed is the same as introduced by us for 7-P tomography of the heart [1]. This combination of imaging system and reconstruction method produces images of good quality and high resolution. Therefore, it seems to offer a promising alternative to conventional planar imaging (using a single pinhole or a parallel-hole collimator).
