Abstract

The diagnosis of pericardial effusion is based upon the existence of an echo-free space, between epi- and pericardium. The presence of such a space most often indicates pericardial effusion as epi- and pericardium seldom can be resolved ultrasonically into separate structures in the absence of intervening fluid (fig. 13.1).
