Convenient monitoring of cardiac output and global left ventricular function by transcutaneous aortovelography — an update

  • Chapter
Cardiac Doppler Diagnosis, Volume II

Abstract

Doppler instrumentation is now widely used in cardiac diagnosis — often in association with echocardiography — by specialists in so-called ‘Doppler Echocardiography’. A very different, but equally important, application of non-invasive Doppler technology is in circulatory patient monitoring and optimization of cardiac output, where beside measurements may be required at all hours of the day to follow changes in cardiac output and other variables reflecting cardiac function. A much less demanding technique is required in the latter application, as the measurement must be quick to perform by equipment which gives reliable results in the hands of the nurse or resident in immediate charge of the patient.
