Abstract

Immunodeficient states have only been recognized over the past 35 years or so following the description of patients with recurrent infections by a US Army physician, Ogden Bruton, in 1952. Although immunodeficiencies seemed to be rare and of little consequence to the population at large, the appearance of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has dramatically altered the picture. Primary immunodeficiencies are present from birth and are either inherited (usually in a recessive manner) or arise following chromosomal defects, or damage to the fetus in utero (Table 11.1). More common are secondary immunodeficiencies, caused by external agents such as drugs or infections, or by malnutrition (Table 11.2).
