Presentation of estrogens to target tissues

  • Chapter
The Climacteric in Perspective

Abstract

The menopause is associated with a marked reduction in estrogen production that results from the cessation of estrogen formation by the ovaries. The decrease in estrogen production can give rise to minor symptoms of estrogen deficiency or can result in more serious complications such as osteoporosis. As well as being at risk from conditions associated with an estrogen deficiency, postmenopausal women also have an increased risk of developing breast or endometrial cancer and estrogens have been implicated in the development of these disorders. Studies we are carrying out, some of which are reviewed in this chapter, are an attempt to reveal the factors which regulate the formation and metabolism of estrogens in postmenopausal women, and also the availability of estrogens to target tissues.
