Abstract
Immune complexes (IC) have been demonstrated in both serum (Tachovsky et al., 1977) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (Glickmann et al., 1980) from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Weak but promising relations between clinical progression, the occurrence of circulating immune complexes (CIC) (Patzold et al., 1980) and fluctuations in the levels of complement factors C4, C3A and C3 (Jans et al., 1982) have been observed. Furthermore, hypocomplementaemia with low levels of C2, C3 and C3B (Trouillas & Betuel, 1977, Jans et. al. 1979), low levels of C4 and C9 in CSF (Jans et al., 1984; Morgan et al., 1984) and alterations in phenotypes of C4, C3 and C3B (Jans & Særensen, 1980, Fauchet et al., 1984) have been reported.
