Abstract
This chapter will consider the attempts that have been made to date to make use of cells in culture to measure toxicity. The past decade has seen some major advances in biotechnology. For some years now it has been possible to isolate individual mammalian genes and to transfer these into bacteria, or indeed to other mammalian cells. By the construction of suitable sequences of DNA which contain promoting sequences as well as the gene in question, it is possible to achieve expression of the gene in an alien environment.
