Abstract
Herpes viruses are widespread throughout the animal kingdom. Characteristically, one or more herpes viruses live in harmless symbiosis with their host. For instance, the oyster and the cobra have their own herpes viruses. However, if a herpes virus by accident gets into the ‘wrong’ host it may cause much damage. Simian herpes virus, whose host is certain old-world monkeys, may cause lethal encephalomyelitis in man, when its normal host is rarely ill.
