Abstract
After embankment of the Grevelingen estuary, large sandflats, the “Slikken van Flakkee”, were reclaimed. The first colonizing plant on these nutrient-poor sandflats is Salicornia europaea agg. Close to the shore line few but tall plants are growing, more inland the plants are smaller and the plant density is increased. At the highest, more desahnized soils, less and very small Salicornia plants are growing. Biomass, plant density, plant weight and ion composition were studied. Factors which can induce fluctuations in plant density are discussed and also factors which can influence plant growth in these areas.
