Abstract
Modern utilitarian philosophy has done much to elaborate upon Bentham’s crude and ambiguous principle of promoting “the greatest happiness of the greatest number”. J. Harsanyi’s contribution stands here among the outstanding ones. I should like to comment on two facets of his doctrine — first of all, his advocacy of a critical brand of utilitarianism, second, the various connections that he made obvious between utilitarian social choice and von Neumann — Morgenstern individual rationality.
