Diffusion and/or Plastic Deformation around Fluid Inclusions in Synthetic Quartz

Abstract

Synthetic quartz containing fluid inclusions of water and NaOH (0.5N) were submitted to high temperature (438°C) and confining pressure (pc = 200 or 350 MPa). Shape modifications of the inclusions were observed together with variations of their filling densities depending on the value of the internal pressure, Pi, relative to the confining pressure Pc : the internal pressure tends to reequilibrate with the confining pressure. X-ray topography at room temperature after treatment (two-phase fluid inclusions) reveals a contrast around the modified fluid inclusions, that did not exist before the experiments.
