Summary
This paper reviews the development of outdoor and indoor closed chambers which have been used in studies of the effects of air pollutants on trees. Large well-ventilated outdoor closed chambers have been designed which optimize pollutant flux and minimise changes in environmental conditions. Differences in intensity and spectral composition of solar radiation, air, soil and leaf temperatures and relative humidity are reviewed with reference to the large geodesic (Solardome) chambers currently in use at CERL (Leatherhead, UK). Changes in these parameters are within the range achieved in open-top chambers.
Indoor chambers have been developed for pollutant effect studies under repeatable environmental conditions or when pollutant-climatic interactions are under investigation. Problems to be overcome include selection of light sources to give realistic intensity and spectral composition and adequate temperature control in view of the high heat load generated by the lights. Adequate air-flow over the experimental material should be ensured particularly when subchambers are used. Removal of NO can be achieved by additional filters and is especially important when O3 fumigations are being carried out in both indoor and outdoor chambers. Recent technical developments are reviewed with reference to the controlled-environment chambers at the GSF (Munich). Closed chambers are particularly useful in the study of pollutant mixtures or fluctuating concentrations when a low constant control value is required. Studies on the effects of O3 and acid mist on Norway spruce have largely been carried out in closed chambers as have studies on interactions with pests and pathogens where an enclosed system is essential. Nevertheless, it is important to maintain a range of technical approaches to the study of air pollution and forest health.
