Abstract

The intensities in a discrete spectrum will often vary in an irregular manner, particularly so at higher levels of excitation. It was recently shown possible to discuss these variations as fluctuations with respect to a smooth spectral envelope. Here this conclusion is derived starting with the thermodynamic theory of fluctuations. The small number of degrees of freedom does however lead to a non-Gaussian distribution of fluctuations.
