Seasonal Variation in the Variance of Stratospheric Ozone and Potential Temperature Over Hohenpeissenberg, F.R.G.

Abstract

All stratospheric trace gases exhibit a temporal variance in their local concentration. For long-lived species that variance is mainly caused by transport. In those cases it is useful to express the variance as equivalent displacement height (EDH). The EDH is defined as the local mean standard deviation divided by the local mean vertical gradient of the tracer’s mixing ratio. The concept of EDH will be discussed. In addition, we present the analysis of the seasonal variations of the EDH of ozone and potential temperature obtained from measurements at Mt. Hohenpeis- senberg in Southern Germany (48°N) by Attmannspacher. The EDH of both tracers show the same seasonal behavior, although they differ in magnitude by a factor of five. The EDH is highest in late winter and has a minimum around August/ September.
